“When I left his office the sky had turned dark and I got back to West Egg in a drizzle.” F. Scott Fitzgerald har hyllats för sin förmåga att förflytta scenen i en berättelse, här från eftermiddag till kväll och från New York till Great Neck i en mening. I D’Evils förflyttar Jay-Z scenen från inledning till peripeti inom loppet av två rader: ”Thinking back when we first learned to use rubbers / He never learned so in turn I’m kidnapping his baby’s mother.” Jay-Z förklarar:
“Here’s where the song takes a sudden turn from a general analysis and reminiscence to a clear narrative. I tried to convey a lot of information in one line: that we were friends so close that we learned basic sex ed at the same time; “that he never learned,” which sets him up as someone sloppier, less calculating and cunning than me; that he had a child as a result, and “a baby’s mother”; and that I kidnapped her, which shows how profoundly “blackhearted” I had become, violently exploiting any opening – even the innocent mother of his child. The line goes from the innocence of two dumb kids learning to use condoms together, bypasses any happiness or joy about the birth of a child, and ends in a truly dark place. It’s the poison of the D’Evils sketched out in a few words.”
Stycket är hämtat ur Jay-Z’s bok Decoded. I den går han igenom utvalda texter i detalj mot bakgrund av sin uppväxt och sina erfarenheter som knarklangare. Boken ger en fylligare bild av hans verk och förklarar till exempel saker som varför det just är ”jake” som är det valda slanguttrycket för polis i början av andra versen på 99 problems: ”jake is one of a million words for the boys in blue, but it’s particularly dismissive and used mostly in New York, so it works as a way of establishing the character of the narrator. He’s a slick New York kid.” Decoded belyser också den “hyperkapitalistiska” livsåskådning som växer ur övergivenheten i det amerikanska gettot – viljan att ta sig ut till varje pris, genom brott om inga andra vägar står öppna. Och eftersom insatsen är så hög bör belöningen också bli det. Boken innehåller också en marxistisk kommentar om klassrelationer och falskt medvetande: ”To some degree charity is a racket in a capitalist system, a way of making our obligations to one another optional, and of keeping poor people feeling a sense of indebtedness to the rich, even if the rich spend every other day exploiting those same people.” Jay-Z är en bra skribent och hans bok är rekommenderad läsning för alla, särskilt de som i likhet med mig har underskattat honom.
